Pilot Discovery Flight

About Course
The discovery flight is an introductory lesson that will allow you to experience the thrill of flying without having to make any commitments to flight training! Visit our training facility where you will get to sit in the left seat and will even have control of the aircraft during the flight. Decide whether the feel of flying is right for you with this cost-friendly, commitment-free introductory lesson. If you choose to continue your training, this initial flight will count towards your requirements.
Private pilot requirements
Ground School
A minimum of 40 hours of ground school sessions is required. Our comprehensive ground school course consists of 16 sessions, taking 3 hours per session, and is normally held in the classroom facilities at the airport. However, due to COVID-19 mandates we currently offering our ground school sessions online via Zoom. Ground School is not a prerequisite for flight training; however, it is recommended to do both at the same time, if you can. It will provide a better understanding of the flight theory and allow you to practice in the air, what you are learning in the classroom. This Power Point course will help you to learn everything that is required for your written test. Our Zoom ground school is $349.99. Ground school kits are available online on the Pilot Shop page.
Commercial Flight Training
The prerequisite for this program is a Private Pilot Licence, and you must be 18 years of age and have a Category I Medical before completion. To complete this program you must have a minimum of 200 hours of flight time, of which 100 hours must be as pilot-in-command, and 20 hours which must be cross-country.
65 Hours Total Time Required
DUAL – 35 HOURS MINIMUM
- 5 hours dual night flying (2 hours dual night cross-country)
- 5 hours dual cross country flying (includes the dual night time)
- 20 hours instrument time (a maximum of 10 hours can be completed on the flight simulator)
SOLO – 30 HOURS MINIMUM
- 25 hours solo practice including a cross country flight of at least 300 NM in distance from the point of departure with 3 stops
- 5 hours of cross-country flying
- 5 hours of night flying (including 2 hours of night cross-country)
Ground School
A minimum of 80 hours of ground school sessions is required. See our Commercial Course Outline for details. It is held in the classroom facilities at the airport. Ground School is not a prerequisite for flight training.
Topics required by Transport Canada for the CPL are of the same subject material for the PPL, however the depth and complexity of each subject that is expanded through the CPL course and requires a much greater understanding. Much of this advanced content includes information that is used to further pilot development when earning additional ratings (Instrument, Multi-Engine, etc). Ground school is available at a cost of $675. Ground school kits are available online on the Pilot Shop page.
Recreational Pilot Permit Requirements
Flight Training
In order to obtain your Recreational Pilot Permit, a minimum of 25 hours of Flight time must be acquired. This Flight time consists of a minimum of 15 hours dual and 5 hours solo Flight time, which you can conveniently complete at our facility. During this training you will gain experience on pre-flight inspection, aircraft ground handling, basic emergency procedures, take-off, landing, radio procedures, and other related exercises. There is no instrument or spin training required. The prerequisite for this program is a Category IV Medical which can be completed with your own physician, and the minimum age to obtain this Permit is 14 years. These lessons will train you for your flight test, which is conducted here, at Spectrum Airways.
Ground School
There is no ground school requirement for the RPP, however you may choose to take our Private Pilot Ground School. Our program includes the comprehensive Private Pilot Ground School Course, consisting of 16 sessions taking 3 hours per session, and is held in the classroom facilities at the airport. Ground School is not a prerequisite for flight training. This PowerPoint course will help you to learn everything that is required for your written test
Restrictions
Pilots who complete this permit will be subject to certain restrictions that licensed pilots are not. Some of these restrictions are as follows:
- Flights within Canada only
- Can only add float endorsement to Permit
- Can only fly an aircraft up to 4 seat capacity
- Can carry only one passenger at a time
- 14 day currency requirement
Examinations
A Transport Canada Flight test and written examination are required, and must be completed within 24 months . The written examination is conducted at a Transport Canada office
